2017 Awards Banquet Recap

Celebrating Success & Recognizing Industry Leaders

The Alberta Chamber of Resources (ACR) 2017 Annual Awards Banquet, was held on February 3rd at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The evening’s event proudly recalled both the challenges and successes of past years, offered a vision for the future and celebrated two leaders in the resources industry.

The main aspect of this annual event is to recognize the outstanding contributions made by  the 2016 Resource Leader of the Year and the 2016 Indigenous Leader of the Year, presented this year to Jim Ellis and Audrey Poitras. The ACR presents these awards annually to a person, organization or project that has demonstrated commitment to the ACR’s mission of providing leadership for the orderly and responsible development of our natural resources.

Jim Ellis, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Energy Regulator was selected as Resource Leader of the Year in recognition of his outstanding leadership in establishing and enhancing the Alberta regulatory system. Audrey Poitras, President of the Métis Nation of Alberta was selected as Indigenous Leader of the Year in recognition of her life-long dedication to advancing the cause of the Métis Nation and building bridges with the resource sector that have helped to ensure there are shared benefits for everyone.

More than 400 people came out to celebrate, including the Honourable Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, Minister of Alberta Energy, industry leaders, students and special guests. Global Edmonton’s Fletcher Kent, emceed the evening, with Ken Coates, Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Saskatchewan campus, as the Keynote speaker.

A few of ACR’s past Presidents came out to enjoy the night, including Leon Zupan, David Middleton and Dr. Elmer Brooker, who was the president in 1982. Previous Resource Leaders of the Year were also in attendance, Dr. David Lynch, Jim Carter and David Tuccaro.

Another exciting element included every year is the attendance of students and young individuals who are provided with the opportunity to dine and socialize with ACR members. The ACR’s Mining Industry Advisory Committee awards 10 Mining Engineering Scholarships to students enrolled in the University of Alberta - Faculty of Engineering, School of Mining, and the students attend the evening to be awarded their scholarship. The scholarships are sponsored by mining companies who are members of the Alberta Chamber of Resources.

As well this year, eight companies sponsored students from MacEwan University and the University of Alberta, allowing them to learn about Alberta’s resource development community in a fun and festive setting.

Entertainment was brought by the Carolines, a live performance of old-tune country led by three Alberta-based singers – Chloe Lyn, Katie Louise and Lesley Yvonne and guitarist Chris Tabbert, along with David Fraser, a professional pianist from Edmonton. A delicious three-course meal prepared by the Shaw Conference Centre’s Chef Serge Belair, was served and laughs, smiles and great conversation was shared all night.

The staff and membership of the ACR are thankful for all of our sponsors for supporting the annual banquet this year and to everyone for attending and celebrating with us. We are proud of another successful year and already look forward to 2018’s event. If you would like to view the full album of photos, please click on the link below.
