Alberta Operations Are At The Heart of Weyerhaeuser's Canadian Operations

Weyerhaeuser Company Limited, a long time Canadian forest products company, established a presence in Alberta in 1989 by purchasing a sawmill and an oriented strand board (OSB) mill in Drayton Valley as well as an OSB mill in Edson. Three years later, Weyerhaeuser expanded in Alberta with the purchase of a pulp mill and a sawmill in Grande Prairie. Today, Alberta is the single largest province in which Weyerhaeuser operates in Canada.

Weyerhaeuser Company Limited – the wholly owned Canadian subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser Company based in Federal Way, Washington – employs approximately 1,750 people in Canada. Of that total more than half work in Alberta. Weyerhaeuser’s other Canadian operations are in British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan. Weyerhaeuser Company Limited is headquartered in Vancouver.

Weyerhaeuser is one of the world’s largest forest products companies. Founded in 1900, Weyerhaeuser employs about 14,000 people in 10 countries and has customers worldwide. Sales in 2010 totaled CDN $6.7 billion. Weyerhaeuser stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

Operating on a land base of 2.13 million hectares licensed from the Government of Alberta, Weyerhaeuser’s Alberta mills serve North American, Asian and European markets for building materials (softwood lumber and OSB) and northern bleached softwood kraft pulp (tissue towel and paper grade). The Grande Prairie Pulp Mill is also on track to become a significant participant in Alberta’s electricity market.

Weyerhaeuser’s commitment to its operations in Alberta is evident through the level of capital investment. Over the past decade, Weyerhaeuser has approved capital projects worth in excess of $700 million. In addition to the new turbine-generator and seven-effect evaporator train at the Grande Prairie Pulp Mill, Weyerhaeuser has invested in:

  •    Dry kilns and auto grading system – Drayton Valley Sawmill
  •    Strander upgrade and warehouse expansion – Edson OSB
  •    New planer mill – Grande Prairie Sawmill
  •    New recovery boiler – Grande Prairie Pulp Mill
  •    Oxygen delignification optimization – Grande Prairie Pulp Mill
  •    Co-generation project – Grande Prairie Pulp Mill

Weyerhaeuser is committed to a suite of core values that guide its operations, including:

  •   Safety: We operate injury-free.
